The Military Child Education Coalition will host the “Supporting Veterans’ Children Through Transitions” course on Friday, June 2 in the Bryant Conference Center, in partnership with the School of Social Work. The event, sponsored by the Alabama Education Trust Fund, will be free to all participants. The class will last from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Military Child Education Coalition aims to benefit the preparation of all military children for college and the workforce, provide ample and responsive resources, and execute a strategic communications plan.

The stated goal of the course is “To ensure inclusive, quality educational opportunities for all military and veteran-connected children affected by mobility, transition, and family separation.”  

The 8 hour event will be led by Amanda Hulsey, the Program Manager of Professional Development and Standards for the Military Child Education Coalition and will focus on the various issues children may face when their parents leave the military, are injured or killed in service or experience illnesses related to combat. The discussion will also include raising resources to effectively implement policies to positively impact these children and adolescents.

In addition to the support of the School of Social Work and the Alabama Education Trust Fund, the event was awarded a grant from The Bob Woodruff Foundation, which aides veterans who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury, PTSD and other “invisible wounds.”

The School of Social Work’s summer involvement will continue in late June with an event centered around veterans in the justice system at Samford University.
