Singer-songwriters, jam bands and alternative rock groups will all be performing in Tuscaloosa this weekend.
Headlining the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater on Saturday, August 20 is three-time Grammy award winner Jill Scott. Scott, a native of Philadelphia, is a popular rhythm and blues artist best known for her songs “A Long Walk” and “He Loves Me.” Her most recent album “Woman” premiered in 2015, and landed at the top of the Billboard R&B charts.
Joining Scott are rapper Common and poet Georgia Me. Common, a rapper, actor, and producer is no stranger to the stage. Most recently, he found himself along co-writer John Legend accepting the award for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards for his work on the song “Glory” from the film “Selma.” Tony, Emmy, and BAFTA award winner Georgia Me will also join the duo. Moon Taxi will take over Druid City Music Hall this weekend with shows on both Friday and Saturday. The Nashville-based alternative rock group is no stranger to Tuscaloosa, as they have performed in the area several times over the past year. Moon Taxi is best known for their hit “All Day All Night” off their newest album “Daybreaker.” They are also known for their songs “Mercury” and Morocco.” Moon Taxi will be joined on Friday by The Weeks, an alternative rock group from Jackson, Mississippi. On Saturday, New Madrid, an alternative rock band from Georgia, will take over the opening duties. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with the show starting at 8:30 p.m. for both days. Rounding up the weekend at Green Bar are three groups with very distinct styles. On Thursday, jam bands take over the venue as Birmingham-based group Little Raine Band performs, along with Georgia band The Orange Constant. On Friday, Leaderdog, a hard rock band hailing from Birmingham takes the stage. Joining Leaderdog is Burn the Harlot, another hard rock group from right here in Tuscaloosa.
Saturday night, the electronic dance band Modern Measure headlines Green Bar. Hailing from Atlanta, Modern Measure is, according to their Facebook page, “a hybrid electronic project like none other. Infusing live organic instrumentation with artfully crafted music production is what sets Modern Measure apart.” Joining Modern Measure is Haunter, another dance electronic band. Shows start each night at 10 p.m. with doors opening at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 and available on Green Bar’s Facebook page.
