Alabama Republicans react to Supreme Court immigration ruling

On Thursday June 24 the Supreme Court reached a stalemate in the deliberation of a national immigration law that would defer the deportation of illegal immigrants with children born in the United States. The Court’s 4-4 tie means the decision of Immigration falls to the lower court’s previous ruling. Members in Alabama’s congressional delegation supported the decision to block President Barack Obama’s immigration initiative.

According to al.com, the Court’s 4-4 decision upholds a federal judge’s ruling that the president exceeded his authority through his executive action on immigration. Republican members of the Alabama House of Representatives have praised the Court’s ruling.

Rep. Bradley Bryne, a republican from Fairhope, said the decision was a significant victory. Similarly, Rep. Mike Rogers, from Saks called on Congress to secure the nation’s borders and create consequences for individuals who don’t follow the country’s immigration laws.

One of the more prolific statements regarding the decision came from U.S. Representative Martha Roby from Montgomery. Roby said illegal immigration in the U.S., and the Court’s ruling should send a clear message to President Obama and future presidents that the constitution must be followed. In addition to stalling immigration reform in Congress, Roby said Obama’s executive action only furthered illegal immigration.

Obama said he was frustrated by the Court’s ruling, and pinned its consequences on congressional Republicans for not confirming Judge Merrick Garland to replace Justice Antonin Scalia.
