Obasohan, McCleney nominated for post-graduate scholarship

Alabama men’s basketball’s Retin Obasohan and softball’s Haylie McCleney were nominated by the University for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship.

The scholarship is presented every year to the top male and female scholar-athletes in the SEC. This year’s recipients will be announced April 28. The winners receive $15,000 in scholarship, while the finalists receive $7,500.

Obasohan was the 2016 SEC Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. He received CoSIDA first-team Academic All-District accolades.

On the court, he was the first UA player to average more than 20 points in conference play (20.6) since Buck Johnson averaged 20.4 in 1986. He led the team in points, minutes, steals, field goals made (193) and attempted (410) and free throws made (146) and attempted (209).

McCleney was the 2015 SEC Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She is a two-time first-team Academic All-American and three-time All-American.

She is the program’s career leader in batting average and on-base percentage. She set the Alabama single-season record for on-base percentage (.588) as a junior in 2015.
