Honors Week will celebrate academically outstanding students from April 3 – 8. A variety of events are part of this annual occasion.
According to UA News, there has been extreme growth in the number of students enrolled in the Honors College, but also a significant upgrade in academics in general.
“It’s not just Honors College,” said Kirk Walter, assistant director of student involvement. “The vast majority of Honors Week is recognizing student achievement scholastically, with regard to community service, and with regard to leadership.”
Sunday included Alpha Lambda Delta initiation, which is one of the University’s many honors societies.
Many ceremonies are held to honor students and faculty in certain colleges. Monday includes College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Honors Convocation in Moody Music Hall. Part of Friday will contain a College of Education Honors Day Reception, taking place in Graves Hall.
One major part of the Capstone Creed is undergraduate research, in which students work with a faculty research mentor.
Wednesday will consist of a Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award Luncheon at the University Club.
Twenty different events will be held throughout campus on Friday, April 8, a day when the University will not hold classes. The most famous will be the annual Tapping on the Mound Ceremony, which started in the 1900’s. This will be at 1:30 p.m. on the Quad.
“At this event, many prestigious awards are bestowed, but also a tapping of the four premiere honors societies,” Walter said.
Along with a day off of school, Honors Week includes the presentation of many awards and recognition for students and faculty that make an impact here at the University.
