WHAT: “African American Read-In.” Students, faculty and staff will have the chance to read poems, passages of prose and songs by African American authors in honor of Black History Month and to celebrate African American women’s contributions to literature.
WHO: Sponsored by the Women and Gender Resource Center
WHEN: Monday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m.
WHERE: Gorgas Library 205
WHY: “I think the read-in is important because not everybody gets the chance to take an African American literature class,” said Jackie Northrup, assistant director of the Women and Gender Resource Center. “Not everybody is exposed to African American authors in their kind of day-to-day. The curriculum in high schools and in college sometimes can leave out African American authors.”
Those who are interested in reading have to pre-register and should do so by contacting [email protected].
