The Arts Council launches 13th Annual Double Exposure Juried Photography Exhibit

There are few places in Alabama where you can find a compilation of unique photographs exhibited by both children and adults, but Tuscaloosa will offer just that this February.

The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa will present the 13th Annual Double Exposure Juried Photography Exhibit in late January. The adult division will be on display at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in the Arts Council Gallery from Jan. 25 to Feb. 26, and the Junior Division will show at the galleries of the Bama Theatre from Jan. 25 to Feb. 21.

Kevin Ledgewood, the publicity manager at the Arts Council of Tuscaloosa, encourages everyone, whether art experts or not, to come and check out what this particular exhibit has to show off.

“The exhibit represents a wide variety of subject matter, style and technique within photography, so it’s worth a visit to the galleries to see the quality of execution and creativity that exist among Alabama artists,” Ledgewood said.

Sponsored by Harrison Galleries in Tuscaloosa, the exhibit will show off work by both youths and adults from all over Alabama. While the exhibit will display more mainstream categories such as portraits and nature, it will also offer visitors more abstract images for viewing. All types of photographic media have been entered in the competition.

“Any types of photographic media was allowed, so viewers will see color, black and white, portraits, landscapes, animals, abstracts and architecture, to name a few,” Ledgewood said.

An image can transport a viewer to any number of locations and environments, and this exhibit will show a wide range of such images by local Alabama artists. Images will be entered from a broad variety of photographers.

“Being statewide, it brings the familiar and unfamiliar landscapes, people and culture from other areas in Alabama to Tuscaloosa by way of the camera,” Ledgewood said.

Each division of the competition will be followed by an awards presentation on the last day of each exhibit. The winner of the Purchase Award in the adult division will have the opportunity to present a solo exhibit at an Arts Council exhibit.

Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about this exhibit, visit tuscarts.org or call 205-758-5195.
