WE'RE HIRING! | Applications for editor positions for the 2026-27 school year are now open.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15. Interviews will be conducted between April 16 and April 17.

Applicants will be notified of their status by April 20.

These are paid positions. All editors are expected to be available after 5 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays to prepare content for our email newsletter that goes out on Monday and Thursday mornings. Exceptions can be made for conflicts with class.

NEWS | UA students will launch Selene and Sixty-Th

NEWS | UA students will launch Selene and Sixty-Three this week — two magazines that are independent successors to Alice Magazine and Nineteen Fifty-Six, which the University abruptly shut down in December. The magazines are being published by Masthead, an alumni nonprofit.

Both publications will host several promotional events this week. Selene, the successor to Alice, will have a launch party Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Druid City Brewing Company. Sixty-Three, Nineteen Fifty-Six’s successor, will cap off its week of events with a launch party on Friday at Monarch Espresso Bar from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

BREAKING | A man was pronounced dead on campus Mon

BREAKING | A man was pronounced dead on campus Monday afternoon after crashing his car into a tree by the Student Center Parking Deck.

The man was slumped over at the wheel of a silver sedan at the intersection of Campus Drive and McCorvey Drive by the Student Center just before 2 p.m. Monday. His car was stopped at the intersection and facing Campus Drive, blocking other drivers, who began honking at him. His car then continued down Campus Drive at low speed until it swerved off the road and crashed into a tree next to the parking deck.

NEWS | A live-in community for women in STEM. A li

NEWS | A live-in community for women in STEM. A library for research on interpersonal violence and gender. References to the first enrolled Black student. The University of Alabama has silently erased all of these and more, as the state and federal governments have targeted diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

After the passage of Alabama Senate Bill 129 in March 2024, the University started the process of dismantling, decommissioning and delisting various programs in order to align with the anti-DEI stance of the law, including the Safe Zone and Black Student Union office. Over the last two years, the University set out to modify or erase programs for and research projects about women and minorities once housed under the Camellia Center but the relationship between those changes and SB129 is unclear.

A year after the passage of SB129, in May 2025, the University renamed the WGRC to the Camellia Center, nondescriptly referring to the Alabama state flower and removing gendered references in its mission statement.

Alex House, a University spokesperson, told The Crimson White that the Camellia Center discontinued programming and support for student groups to focus resources “on its important mission of advocacy, outreach, and support related to interpersonal violence affecting members of the UA community.” She did not say whether the change was related to SB129.

The changes came after House told The Crimson White in May 2025 that “the center’s services will remain the same” including “programming that promotes wellbeing and connection.”

NEWS | The spike in gasoline prices in the past fe

NEWS | The spike in gasoline prices in the past few weeks due to the Iran war has been a cause for concern among UA students and the Tuscaloosa community. While the cost of gas prices all over the country has been greatly impacted by the conflict, the South, specifically Alabama, has been hit the hardest.

According to the Institution of Taxation and Economic Policy, Alabama residents currently pay $52 more per month on gas since the war began, the largest increase of any state. The cost of regular gas has increased nearly one dollar since this time last year from an average of $2.78 per gallon to $3.64 as of March 30, according to AAA Gas Prices.

Tuscaloosa County’s average cost per regular gallon, as of March 30, is $3.62.

James J. Cochran, a professor of statistics at the University, said that gas prices were likely to increase because of spring break, but that the war in Iran caused a decrease in the United States’ oil supply, leading to higher costs for gas. In response to attacks from Israel and the United States, Iran has effectively blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20 million barrels of crude oil pass through each day, or one fifth of global oil consumption.

SPORTS | Alabama women’s basketball head coach Kri

SPORTS | Alabama women’s basketball head coach Kristy Curry was hired by South Florida, USF Athletics confirmed on Tuesday.

“Coach Curry did a commendable job with our women’s basketball team over the last 13 years, leading the program back to the NCAA tournament and winning 20-plus games in each of the last five seasons,” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said in a statement. “We appreciate her contributions and wish her and her family well moving forward. As we begin a national search for our next head coach, Alabama Athletics remains committed to the continued growth and investment in women's basketball.”

Curry will depart after 13 seasons at the helm of the Crimson Tide, following her squad’s loss in a 69-68 heartbreaker to 3-seed Louisville in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Monday. She accumulated a 245-173 record across her 13 seasons at Alabama, which included five NCAA tournament appearances. She also led Alabama to three straight second round appearances, the program’s most successful stretch in the Big Dance since the Rick Moody era.

Curry signed a four-year contract extension last summer, which boosted her pay to $700,000 per year. Instead of fulfilling that contract, Curry will trade crimson and white for green and gold after a lengthy tenure in Tuscaloosa.

NEWS | The St. Francis of Assisi University Parish

NEWS | The St. Francis of Assisi University Parish was standing room only for a memorial Catholic service for 20-year-old UA student Jimmy Gracey, who died in Barcelona last week while visiting friends.

Father Wyman Vintson led the congregation of hundreds of mostly college-aged people in Mass, where churchgoers prayed for Gracey’s soul and for comfort for those grieving his loss. Dozens of members of Gracey’s fraternity, Theta Chi, also attended.

Vintson’s sermon centered on the idea that grief “is not the end of the story.”

“The grief is real. It weighs on the heart. It changes the way the world feels, and makes even ordinary things feel difficult at times,” Vintson said. “And again, faith doesn’t ask us to deny that.”

Vintson said that Gracey has been placed into the hands of God.

“Life won’t be the same,” Vintson said. “Something has changed permanently. But that doesn’t mean that everything is lost, because the love that everyone carries and the love that Jimmy shared in his life is not erased by death. It’s held within the life of God.”

NEWS | Eight students filed a federal lawsuit agai

NEWS | Eight students filed a federal lawsuit against the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees on Monday challenging the suspensions of Nineteen-Fifty Six and Alice magazines.

In December, the University permanently closed the publications, citing a memo issued by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi in July that provided nonbinding suggestions for federal funds recipients to comply with antidiscrimination laws. Experts previously told The Crimson White that the suspensions likely violated the First Amendment.

The plaintiffs are Rihanna Pointer, Grant Sturdivant, Timoni Taite, Jaleel Matanmi, Jermaine Ball, Sara Beth Caddell, Gabrielle Gunter and Emmy Waugh, all of whom worked for one of the publications.

The lawsuit claims that the University illegally suspended the magazines because of their editorial viewpoints while allowing other campus publications with different editorial viewpoints to remain open. Nineteen-Fifty Six primarily served Black students, while Alice’s intended audience was women.

“Marginalized students deserve the opportunity to participate in magazines and have access to the same resources and support that other publications have to create opportunities for engagement, discussion, and exploration on a wide array of issues,” said Gunter, who served as editor-in-chief of Alice. “Discrimination based on the views of students who seek to create inclusive media for all students has no place in our society, so it’s really important to me to keep fighting for what is right.”

SPORTS | Four-seed Alabama men’s basketball blew b

SPORTS | Four-seed Alabama men’s basketball blew by 5-seed Texas Tech 90-65 in Tampa on Sunday night in the second round of the NCAA tournament, punching its ticket to the Sweet 16.

Four Crimson Tide players scored double figures, including guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr., who led all scorers with 24 points on 7/10 shooting and 6/9 from deep. Alabama produced one of its strongest defensive efforts this season, dominating the glass 47-35 and forcing 10 turnovers from the Red Raiders.
