Shelley Godwin has been named the new assistant coach for women’s tennis, head coach Jenny Mainz announced Friday in a release.

Godwin spent the last four years as Middle Tennessee State’s women’s tennis head coach. She led the Blue Raiders to four consecutive winning seasons. She coached two ranked singles players. In the 2014-15 season, the Blue Raiders were ranked as high as No. 65 in the ITA rankings and finished the year at No. 75, which was the first time the team finished the season ranked in more than 10 years.

Godwin played at Alabama from 2005-09.

“It’s great to welcome back former UA women’s tennis standout Shelley Godwin to our Alabama family,” Mainz said. “Our Alabama women’s tennis program has taken a giant step forward with Shelley’s commitment to return to her alma mater to coach. Shelley has done a commendable job in her coaching career where she has coached the same way she competed for the Tide – with a fierce competitive spirit and a genuine love for the game.”

After graduating in 2009, Godwin spent two years at Michigan State as an assistant head coach. The Spartans ranked as high as No. 52 in 2010-11.

As a member of the Crimson Tide, she had 88 combined victories, 59 of which came in singles play. She served as the captain in her final three years on the team. She was named to the Academic All-SEC team every year.

Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders had six ITA Scholar Athletes along with several academic conference honors under Godwin.

“I am incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to be the assistant women’s tennis coach at The University of Alabama,” Godwin said. “It’s an honor to return to my alma mater and have the privilege of giving back to a program and university that has given so much to me. I’m excited to work alongside Coach Mainz, one of the best in college tennis, as we share the same passion and vision for continuing to grow this great program.”
