It ended with a walk-off but not a hit.
Molly Fichtner stepped up to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. The ball she hit was catchable.
The University of Central Florida’s center fielder, second baseman and right fielder came in to catch the ball. The ball dropped in and out of the center fielder’s glove.
Ryan Iamurri ran in from third to score the only run in the 1-0 win.
“We’ll take it though because they made every play up until that point,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “Every ball that we hit hard, they made every play and we didn’t execute a couple times early in the game. … And so when it’s a good game against two good pitchers, the little things are going to come back and either count for you or against you.”
Iamurri celebrated her senior day and her 22nd birthday on Saturday. She celebrated with two hits and two RBIs. Her role as the game-winning run was surprising to her after Hunt got out at the plate on a fielder’s choice that advanced her from third.
“I was telling them when Hunt got out at the plate, I was like, ‘Huh, maybe a little fate is supposed to take place,’ and clearly that hit might’ve been a little fate, Molly’s hit, so we’ll take it,” Iamurri said.
With the win, Leslie Jury pitched her fifth complete game and improved to 5-1 on the season with a 1.59 ERA.
“[Jury] had some key strikeouts,” Murphy said. “I think the best thing about it though, her changeup was awesome today. That’s the best I’ve seen her changeup in three years.”
Alabama’s previous game was a 14-5 win over Virginia Tech. With it, NFCA Hall of Fame member Murphy won his 800th game at Alabama.
“Blessed to be with such great coaches,” Murphy said. “I mean, for years and and years and years, that’s what it’s been all about, just a great coaching staff and just great players that have won every game.”
Kallie Case tied a school record for most steals in a game with four. Haylie McCleney didn’t set a record, but she went from hitting .750 in Friday’s game against UCF to being walked four times against Virginia Tech.
“I think in the first game, the umpire was king of squeezing the zone a little bit, and if he’s going to do that, it’s my job as a leadoff to get on base because I have really great hitters behind me so anything that I can do to get on base, to let them hit, get runs in, that’s what I’m going to do,” McCleney said.
With the pair of wins, the Crimson Tide advanced to 12-2 on the season.
No. 7 Alabama will face McNeese State at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
