Pledgeship temporarily suspended until Monday

Pledgeship has been temporarily suspended until Monday, according to a statement released by Tim Hebson, dean of students.

The statement described the suspension as a tool to clarify the pledgeship process.

“This temporary suspension, which is not unusual, gives us an opportunity for additional communication and education with fraternity leadership to ensure that there is no misunderstanding of the rules and goals of pledgeship,” Hebson said.

The suspension comes during a period of national attention on the greek system. On Wednesday, a Crimson White article, The Final Barrier, reported at least two black potential new members going through this year’s sorority recruitment were dropped from all 16 Panhellenic sorority houses. The article on greek segregation has since been picked up by national media, such as CNN, the New York Times, USA Today, Buzzfeed and the Washington Times.

“We have always and will continue to take ‘time outs’ from the new member period as needed,” Hebson said.

The Crimson White contacted Interfraternity Council President Drew Carmichael, who did not reply with a statement.
