Alabama freshman second baseman Kyle Overstreet was selected as the 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove second baseman, as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday. The national award goes to the best player at his defensive position in NCAA Division I baseball.

Overstreet started all 63 games at second base and was named to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team. Defensively, Overstreet was outstanding with the glove all season, helping the Crimson Tide finish second in the country with 80 double plays in 2013. Additionally, the native of Boaz, Ala., committed just six errors in 363 attempts for a .983 fielding percentage.

Overstreet played a key role in most of the double plays turned by the Tide, as he was involved in an SEC-leading 67 twin-killings, or 83 percent of the double plays turned by Alabama.

At the plate, Overstreet finished his first season at the Capstone with a .271 batting average, with 37 RBI, 23 runs scored, 8 doubles and a triple. He was the toughest batter in the Crimson Tide lineup to strikeout, as he struck out 23 times in 262 trips to the plate, or once in 10.2 official at-bats.

Overstreet is the second Alabama player to win the ABCA Gold Glove. UA centerfielder Taylor Dugas earned the award following the 2011 season.
