Impact Alabama seeks UA grads for open staff

Students who are interested in finding a community-oriented job immediately following graduation are in luck.

The nonprofit organization Impact Alabama is recruiting recent college graduates to fill full-time regional coordinator positions beginning in December and July. Those who are hired in December will work seven months with the group, and those hired in July will work for a year. The positions include a monthly stipend, health insurance and $5,000 to use for student loans.

“The regional coordinators will be working out in the community on large-scale service learning projects and travel statewide to implement and oversee three service initiatives,” Sarah Louise Smith, executive director of Impact Alabama, said.

FocusFirst, SaveFirst and CollegeFirst, the three service initiatives, are designed to engage students in addressing community needs and to enhance students’ sense of social and civic responsibility.

FocusFirst trains college students to provide free vision screenings and follow-up care to preschool-age children in low-income rural and urban areas throughout Alabama.

SaveFirst provides tax preparations services and opportunities for economic improvement to working families in Alabama.

CollegeFirst is a summer advanced placement initiative that implements AP academic enrichment programs aimed at helping high school students prepare for AP classes.

Founded in 2004, Impact Alabama operates throughout all 67 counties in the state and has a presence on 25 universities. Its mission is to provide students the ability to address human and community needs within a set of structured service opportunities.

“The University of Alabama is one of our best partners and most of our employees are graduates of UA, but we also recruit at other schools in Alabama as well as all over the country,” Smith said.

Channing Kennedy is the programs manager at Impact Alabama and said college graduates can gain a lot from the experience.

“It gives you a really substantive position and a chance to have a lot of responsibility straight out of college, which is very beneficial for recent college graduates,” Kennedy said.

Students who are interested in applying should email a cover letter, resume and transcript to Stephen Blank at [email protected].
