The annual pilgrimage of Snapchat Bitmojis dispersing from Tuscaloosa, shows students that spring break has arrived. For students across the South, coastal cities, going home and destination trips holds tight to the top spots for spring break destinations.
Dayanna Falcones, a sophomore majoring in economics, said she is heading to Panama City Beach to enjoy walking along the beach, visiting shops and spending time outside.
Beaches are a getaway for college students over spring break. Christina McKinley, a sophomore majoring in public relations, is also traveling to Panama City Beach and staying at a friend’s condo.
“We’ve been planning the trip for months,” McKinley said. “We plan on both going out and having fun, but also relaxing and enjoying our time off by tanning on the beach.”
While relaxing is part of the plan, McKinley also hopes to stay active during the trip. She said she is planning to run a half marathon following the break.
While many students are heading to Florida, others are traveling even farther south for spring break, exploring beaches outside the country. Austin Love, a freshman majoring in advertising, is traveling to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
“We chose it because the weather is going to be great,” Love said. “If everyone has a good time and I come back very tan, it will be a successful spring break.”
Not every student is heading to the beach. Some are choosing city trips or going home for a relaxing “staycation.” Alex Stern, a junior majoring in neuroscience, is traveling to Nashville to celebrate a friend’s 21st birthday.
“My friend is from Kentucky and I’m from Huntsville, so Nashville was a good place to meet in the middle,” Stern said. “There’s also a lot to do there that’s relatively affordable.”
Angelica Fiscella, a junior majoring in news media, said spring break means heading home since out of state students don’t get many chances to spend time with family during the school year.
“As a student from New Jersey, I really only get to go home during breaks,” Fiscella said. “I’m excited to see my hometown friends and family, and I’m definitely looking forward to the much needed rest.
