The University announced the development of the UA Wiregrass Hub last Thursday. The new facility is expected to house the Critical Response and Information System for Operational Needs Water Initiative, as well as support research and economic development across southeast Alabama.
According to the University, flooding and other water-related challenges account for more than 75% of presidential disaster declarations nationwide. The CRIMSON Water Initiative will use data-driven forecasting tools to help communities prepare and respond to these threats.
“The opening of the UA Wiregrass Hub represents another major step in The University of Alabama’s commitment to strengthening innovation and economic development across our state,” UA president Peter Mohler said. . “By expanding nationally recognized expertise in water research and planning directly into Southeast Alabama, we are continuing our mission as an institution that serves every region of our state.”
The University is also home to the Alabama Water Institute, NOAA National Water Center and the U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility, which contribute to the nation’s ability to respond quickly to weather-related emergencies.
The Wiregrass Hub will also house a community engagement space and additional industry support in collaboration with the Alabama Small Business Development Center. The space will provide students with resources and access to higher education opportunities.
The Wiregrass Hub will open in fall of 2026 in downtown Enterprise.
