With an unexpected day off after classes were cancelled due to freezing temperatures, students across campus are spending their time in many different ways, ranging from productivity to much needed relaxation.
Elizabeth Thurow, a sophomore majoring in political science, spent her snow day catching up on schoolwork at PJ’s coffee shop on the Strip.
“The first few weeks of the semester are really busy, so it’s been good to be able to get caught up,” she said.
Other students embraced the break with a more laid back approach. Archana Raj, a sophomore majoring in criminal justice, said she was excited to have the day off, spending it with good food and entertainment.
“All I did today was get Whataburger and binge watch the Twilight parody Breaking Wind,” she said.
Others said the snow day was the perfect excuse for self care. Grace Helton, a freshman majoring in criminal justice and psychology, took advantage of the free time by getting her nails done. “It seemed like the perfect thing to do to get out of the cold,” she said.
Miley Bruni, a sophomore majoring in early education, said she had very important plans for today.
“I sat in the Ticketmaster queue and bought my Harry Styles tickets,” she said. I don’t think I would have gotten them without the day off.”
Not everyone was thrilled with how the day unfolded. Caleb Burks, a junior majoring in aerospace engineering, said he was happy about classes being canceled but disappointed by other closures on campus.
“I really wanted to go to the gym, but then I realized it was closed,” he said. “Now I have to go to a different one off campus. It’s kind of annoying.”
Brendan O’Sullivan, a junior majoring in economics, also had mixed feelings about the day off. “My friends are dragging me shopping because we have the day off,” he said. “Since we don’t have class, I can’t lie and say I’m busy, so now I have to go.”
University operations will resume Tuesday at 8 a.m.
