Alabama men’s club hockey did not take the ice against High Point University as scheduled on Jan. 23 or Jan. 24 after weather conditions forced a postponement. The games against High Point have been moved to Feb. 13 at 9:45 p.m. CT and Feb 14 at 5:15 p.m. at Pelham Civic Complex. The Frozen Tide now turns its attention toward the Iron Cup matchup against Auburn University on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. CT at Pelham Civic Complex.
The postponement comes as Alabama continues its season with a 5-15-2 record through 23 games played. The Frozen Tide has recorded one overtime win and one shootout victory while scoring 54 goals and allowing 93.
Despite its losing record, Alabama has progressed as the season has gone on. The Frozen Tide has emphasized puck movement through the neutral zone and more controlled offensive possessions, allowing the team to generate chances to score even in games where it has faced extended defensive pressure.
Alabama came off a 3-2 road win against the University of Oregon on Jan. 17 where the Frozen Tide scored two third-period goals to lead the Ducks. The victory showcased the team’s ability to capitalize on momentum swings and execution, a trend the team has highlighted in recent weeks.
Sophomore forward Tyler Zent has been Alabama’s most consistent contributor this season, leading the team with 16 points on seven goals and nine assists. Junior forward Garett Conner has added 14 points. Together with Petrich, this trio has led the team and provided it with reliable shooting options in key moments.
In net, freshman goaltender Perry Jacobs has taken on the majority of the workload, earning three wins while holding a .913 save percentage. Jacobs has faced high shot totals but has helped lead the team to victory nonetheless. The netminder also led the team to a shootout win against the University of North Carolina.
With the High Point game on hold, Alabama now prepares for the Iron Cup, one of its most anticipated matchups. The rivalry game often places an emphasis on the defensive discipline of the team and goaltending rather than the standings.
After a rocky start, the Iron Cup will provide Alabama with an opportunity to measure its progress in a high-intensity environment. The team will look to carry its recent structure and pace into the matchup against Auburn on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. CT. Fans can attend the game at Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena.
