The Crimson White

UA’s offense dominant but sloppy

The University of Alabama football team did not seem as focused or as impressive against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers as it did against Michigan in the first game of the season.

The Hilltopper defense held the Alabama offense to a closer-than-expected game. The Tide entered a 39-point favorite and fell short of expectations. If not for the three fumbles committed by the Toppers, the game could have been narrower than it was.

The Crimson Tide showed a stronger passing game, with all four of its touchdowns delivered from AJ McCarron to his receivers. What Tide fans did not see was the prevailing force of the running game they have come to expect from the Alabama offense. The team rushed for fewer yards against WKU than T.J. Yeldon was able to by himself against Michigan two weekends ago.

It seemed the Toppers studied up on the Tide running game and were able to effectively shut it down, pushing AJ McCarron to pass to his receivers. With young players like Yeldon in the backfield, the team may need more experience to return to the strength it showed in its running game under Trent Richardson and Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram. Other teams can stack their defenses to prevent the Tide’s rushing game and force McCarron to throw the ball, making it important for the Tide to have an effective passing game.

McCarron was able to allow fans a glimpse into the Tide’s passing game this weekend against the Hilltoppers. The team was able to switch gears from the Michigan game, where the rushing game was prevalent, to a focus on passing against WKU. McCarron was one touchdown shy of tying the school record for most passing touchdowns in a single game. He was able to make three completions over 20 yards and connected with seven receivers on 14 of his 19 passes. Overall, he showed poise and effectiveness with his throws.

However, if the team is going to rely on the passing game, the players must eliminate dropped passes. The offensive line will also need to protect its quarterback and lend McCarron time to find receivers downfield. The quarterback was sacked six times during the game, showing areas of improvement for the linemen. Head coach Nick Saban and his players said their passing game was not up to par after the game.

As the Tide gears up to play powerful teams within the Southeastern Conference, McCarron’s passing game may become more important. McCarron showed he has the ability to deliver the ball with accuracy into the hands of his receivers. He needs the protection of his offensive line and the quickness of his receivers to prove his abilities. Alabama will be known as both a passing and a rushing proficient team if this happens.
