Spotify and Apple Music both released their end of the year listening reports, Wrapped and Replay respectively, giving listeners a chance to reflect on their top artists, albums and songs. The Crimson White editors have been streaming in the newsroom. Here’s what they listened to.
Editor-in-chief Maven Navarro has been inspired by her Texas roots in her listening, with a full Beyonce sweep across her listening stats. Her most listened to album was “Cowboy Carter” with one of the singles, “Texas Hold ‘Em,” being her top song.
Similar to Navarro, one artist took over the statistics for multimedia editor Eddie Hernandez. His top artist of the year was Bad Bunny, and his top album was “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” by the same artist.
Opinion editor Ella Seaton’s artist of the year was Tyler Childers, who released an album, “Snipe Hunter,” in July. Her highest-streamed song was “The Scientist” by the cast of “Glee.” Her top album was quite different, with “Virgin” by Lorde coming out first.
Emma Brandenburg, the engagement editor, is one of the creative forces of The Crimson White, so it is no surprise her music taste matches. Her artist of the year was “Hozier,” but her top album was “Virgin” by Lorde, matching Seaton.
Shelby West, chief page and graphics editor had the band The Smiths top her list. Her top song was “Jigsaw Falling into Place” by Radiohead.
John Weinstein was a third editor whose stats have been taken over by a singular artist, being a top 1% global fan of The Strokes, according to Spotify. His song of the year was “The New Abnormal” by The Strokes.
Max Krzeminski, the culture editor had a wide variety of music in his listening statistics. His top artist was Dua Lipa, with “Radical Optimism” by Lipa ending as his highest album. There is a dramatic shift, however, as “The World According to Chris” from the album “Riverdale: Special Episode – Carrie The Musical” was his song of the year.
Zac Butterworth, the assistant culture editor, had Kanye West claim the first place spot on his top artists of the year, and Interpol’s 2002 project “Turn on the Bright Lights” finished as his top album.
Photo editor Riley Reiske took on country music this year, with Morgan Wallen landing as her top artist and his album “I’m the Problem” finishing at the top as well. Her assistant, Hannah Grace Mayfield, had a song top her list with “Hot for Teacher” by Van Halen, but switches genres with her highest artist, Taylor Swift.
Rachel Talley, one of the chief copy editors, most listened to artist matched Reiske with Morgan Wallen, but her song of the year was “Rush E. (Piano Solo Version)” by Kassia. Chief copy editor Lauren Chumbley’s top artist was Alice in Chains, and her top album was “La Rana” by Agustin Pereyra Lucena.
