The University of Alabama collected 630,624 pounds of food in this year’s Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive, setting a record for the 31-year-old event, according to a UA news release. The donations will go to the West Alabama Food Bank.
The student-led organization uses the University’s Iron Bowl rivalry with Auburn University to encourage donations from Oct. 3 to Nov. 20. Its primary goal is to support communities across West Alabama.
“I think it really reflects the selflessness of our university being willing to step in and every student wanting to help,” said CC Hahn, BABH president. “It was just so amazing to see that type of selflessness on a college campus.”
Auburn’s Beat Bama Beat Hunger raised 648,305 pounds of food, bringing the combined total between the food drives to more than 1.2 million pounds of food.
Hahn said this record reflects the growth of BABH.
“I have been a part of the organization since I was a freshman, so being able to do what past presidents have done, but then building off of that was super awesome to see our hard work pay off,” she said.
