The University currently has 19 ongoing construction projects, according to Building Bama. From wifi expansions to bedroom renovations, here is a look at 10 of the projects currently in progress.
Athletic Venues Wi-Fi Expansion and Enhancements
The University will add 140 network switches and 1,998 wireless access points to Bryant-Denny Stadium to better serve the athletics department, as well as fans. There will also be network switches and wireless access points added to Coleman Coliseum as needed. This $13,000,000 enhancement will include the installation of miles of low-voltage cabling and pathway throughout the venues.
Student Well-Being Hub — 259 Kilgore Lane
The new student well-being hub will house offices for the Counseling Center, Collegiate Recovery and Intervention Services, Health Promotion and Wellness, and the Women and Gender Resource Center. According to Building Bama, the new building will “promote the importance of serving students holistically while on campus.” The budget for this project is $59,936,000.
Smith Family Center for the Performing Arts — Peter Bryce Campus
The Smith Family for Performing Arts will serve as a state-of-the-art venue for the Department of Theatre and Dance. The center will boast a 350-seat drama theater, a 450-seat dance theater and a 250-seat studio theatre. It will also have classrooms, faculty offices, a scenery shop, rehearsal halls and control rooms. This will open up Rowand-Johnson Hall and the English Building for potential other uses. The project’s budget is $177,002,282.
High Performance Computing and Data Center — 709 Johnny Stallings Drive
This facility will serve the Office of Research and Economic Development, as well as other academic needs on campus. According to Building Bama, it will provide “an accessible structure and shell space for both compute and support infrastructure.” The budget for this project is $96,000,000.
EV Bus and Charging Infrastructure — UA Transportation Maintenance Facility, USC Campus
This project will allow for eight new electronic buses to join the Crimson Ride system, as well as appropriate charging equipment. The buses are a part of the UA Transportation Services’ “Zero-emission fleet transition plan.” The budget for this project is $10,780,164.
Colonial Drive and University Boulevard Infrastructure & Enhancements — Between Carmichael Hall and Judy Bonner Drive on Colonial Drive and University Boulevard
Several jobs will be a part of this project, including the rerouting of sewer systems, new thermal piping, replacement of water lines, and the extension of UA natural gas. The budget for this project is $15 million.
Coleman Coliseum Basketball Training and Player Development Facility Expansion and Renovation — 1201 Coliseum Drive
The existing basketball training facility will be expanded to add a new practice facility, as well as a weight room for the men’s team, allowing the women’s team to move into the facility currently occupied by the men’s team. Expanded areas will also include player development areas for both teams. The budget for this project is $59,183,973.
Finance Administrative Services Building — 220 Paul W. Bryant Drive East
The Finance Administrative Services building will undergo a full renovation. The Alabama Credit Union, the space’s current occupant, will move to a new space on University Boulevard. The renovated building will include the Financial Accounting and Reporting, the Tax Office, the Budget Office, and Finance Information Systems and Data Integrity. The budget for this project is $6,900,000.
Campus Steam Decommissioning
While the University’s current steam distribution center is over 60 years old, this project will replace systems to better provide reliable and efficient thermal energy. Multiple academic buildings systems are included in the update, including ten Hoor, Reese Phifer, Hardaway, Rowand-Johnson, and Farrah Halls. The budget for this project is $14,650,000.
Psychology Building Renovation and Addition — 330 Kirkbride Lane
The Department of Psychology will relocate from Gordon Palmer Hall to a vacant building formerly known as Searcy Hall. The expansion of the building will include a large lecture hall, a classroom, 35 clinical labs and additional shared labs, 41 offices, and shared graduate student offices. The budget for this project is $29,331,872.
