The Tuscaloosa City Council authorized the appointment of election officers on Tuesday in preparation for the upcoming municipal election occurring March 4.
Tuscaloosa residents will elect a mayor and members of city council and the Board of Education. The election officers, who will be chosen from qualified residents, will assist in election proceedings such as assisting voters, verifying voter eligibility and overseeing election procedures.
Matthew Wilson, a city council member for District 1, congratulated the District on the forthcoming of a new Jack’s location.
John Faile, a city council member for District 6, said “Guess where I’ll be Saturday,” in support of the new location.
Cassius Lanier, a member for District Seven, said that a community cleanup taking place in District 7 will meet at Skyland Elementary School on Saturday at 9 a.m.
“We got a ton of volunteers,” she said. “Come on out and help us clean up the district.”
The council authorized $700 disbursements each from District 1, District 6 and District 7’s improvement funds to the Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports Commission. Additionally, the council authorized $5,000 in disbursements from district improvement funds to local schools and a $500 disbursement to the Tuscaloosa Public Library.
Property demolition was also discussed at the meeting. The house located at 3209 7th street currently has 46 housing code violations. The council initially moved to table the demolition for 30 days before Gaffery Buggs, the property’s owner, discussed his recent repairs of the property and was granted an additional 60 days to continue his progress. The demolition of the house at 2216 Loop Road, which has 48 housing code violations, was tabled for 30 days.
The city council additionally ordered the demolition of the house at 2204 Dinah Washington Avenue, which has 40 housing code violations.
