In a teleconference with the University Board of Trustees Thursday, a resolution was passed approving the first phase for the East Quad Energy Plant.
Lynda Gilbert, vice president for financial affairs, presented the resolution.
“As part of the campus master plan activities, the University has designated a centralized energy plant that, once completed, will consist of three energy plants for steam and chilled water generation,” Gilbert said.
Gilbert said the first plant is currently in its final stage of completion near Shelby Hall. The second plant will cater to a number of buildings on campus, such as Gallalee, Nott, Lloyd, Russell, Biology, and Gordon Palmer, in addition to Mary Harmon Bryant Hall and Rodgers Library.
The preliminary budget for the project rounds out to more than $10 million overall. The project will be funded through the Recovery Zone Economic Development Bonds and Plant Funds.
Other items discussed during the meeting primarily concerned the University of Alabama at Birmingham, including a purchase and sale agreement between UAB and the Alabama Power Company and a property acquisition. All resolutions were passed.
