The Student Government Association is partnering with the Tuscaloosa Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) Center to create a committee to bring awareness to and address sexual assault on campus.

The Tuscaloosa SAFE Center is a West Alabama provider of 24-hour healthcare, advocacy and counseling services for survivors of sexual assault. Their office building is located right off campus at 1601 University Boulevard East, Suite 150 Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.

“I believe one of the most important ways to make change happen is to start in your own backyard,” Brooks Payne the Vice President of External Affairs told the Crimson White. “The S.A.F.E. Center Committee will offer students the ability to do just that.”

Students are welcome to apply online via the SGA website. The application is also a qualtrics survey so it can be accessed through SGA’s social media websites. Payne also has the link on his cabinet’s Facebook and Twitter page.

Payne said all students are welcome to apply, and no experience or knowledge of the SAFE Center nor campus government is required. Applications close on Friday, Nov. 15, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.

“When I ran for VPEA back in March, I pledged to make combatting sexual assault a priority by partnering with organizations in Tuscaloosa who need boots on the ground and awareness raised,” Payne said. “Partnering up with the SAFE Center was really a no-brainer to accomplish this goal, and I am excited to see the ideas and goals that UA students will bring to the committee.”
