Women’s basketball suffers loss on the road to Utah

Alabama women’s basketball fell to Utah in its second game of the season to suffer its first loss.

Leading the Crimson Tide was junior Jasmine Walker with 18 points, one shy of her career best, along with eight rebounds. Following her was freshman De’Sha Benjamin and junior Cierra Johnson with 13 points apiece. Junior Jordan Lewis finished with 11 points and three steals.

In the opening quarter, Benjamin hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Crimson Tide the lead and helped carry that momentum into the second quarter leading 21-16. The Utes outscored Alabama 16-8 to take the 32-29 lead into halftime. Alabama shot 10-for-30 and 33 percent in the first half and Utah shot 14-for-35 and 40 percent.

Throughout the second half, Alabama hung around, scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter but lost 72-62.

Alabama finished shooting 21-for-60 and 35 percent from the field while Utah went 29-for-67 and 43 percent from the field. Alabama was out rebounded by the Utes 50-31. The Crimson Tide tallied 11 assists and four blocks, coming from four different players. Alabama finished 61 percent of its free throw attempts.

Alabama is now 1-1 overall against Utah and 1-1 overall this season.

Alabama stays on the road as it battles SMU Thursday, Nov. 15. The Crimson Tide is scheduled to tip off against the Mustangs at 7 p.m. CT in Dallas, Texas.
