Football season and “darty” season tend to dominate students’ weekend activities during the school year. However, January and February create an awkward pause between the two seasons when there is no more tailgating and “darties” have yet to begin. During these two months, many students struggle to find activities to do on the weekend. However, there are plenty of recreational activities around Tuscaloosa that students may not have tried.

Lake Nicol: When it comes to outdoors activities, Lake Nicol has it all. Visitors can canoe, camp, kayak, swim and hike. Additionally, Lake Nicol’s scenery provides opportunities for those interested in nature photography. 

“Whenever I go to Lake Nicol I spend most of my time swimming and kayaking,” said Blake Underwood, a freshman majoring in general business. “I spent a lot of time there in the fall and I’m excited to go back once the weather warms up.”

Paul W. Bryant Museum: The title of this museum is self-explanatory to Bama fans. Dedicated to former Alabama head football coach Paul William “Bear” Bryant, this museum is all about the sports history of The University of Alabama.

Uptown Art: With the motto “Meet, Drink and Paint Happy,” Uptown Art provides art instructions and all the materials that one needs to create a personal masterpiece while also sharing a drink with friends.

Bama Belle: Docked at Medeiros Point on the Black Warrior River, Bama Bell takes its passengers on a boat sightseeing tour throughout Tuscaloosa.

UpSurge Trampoline Park: Filled with trampolines, obstacle courses and a foam pit, UpSurge attracts fun-lovers of all ages. It’s also an easy way to exercise. 

“The last time I went to UpSurge my legs were sore for days because I jumped on the trampolines so much, but I had such a great time,” said Emma Grace Lloyd, a sophomore majoring in elementary education. “My sorority is going to UpSurge for a sisterhood event in a few days and I can’t wait.”

Breakout Tuscaloosa: Breakout Tuscaloosa puts people’s problem-solving skills to the test daily. Portraying the role of kidnapped hostages or investigation agents, teams have to search for clues to figure out how to escape the room that they are locked in. 

“Breakout Tuscaloosa is one of my favorite things to do with my friends,” said Margaret Einstein , a sophomore majoring in advertising. “My friends always make fun of me because I can never solve any of the clues.”

Haunted Tuscaloosa Tours: Haunted Tuscaloosa Tours begin and end at the Historic Drish House, the most haunted place in Tuscaloosa. Participants spend an hour and a half learning about the history of Tuscaloosa and its spooky secrets.

Bowers Park Pool: No matter what the weather is like, Bowers Park is equipped to have visitors because of its indoor and outdoor activities. Bowers Park Pool offers disc golf, a recreational pool, an indoor walking track and a sport court gym among other activities.
