Alabama gymnastics team snags national No. 5 rank

The Alabama gymnastics team is ranked fifth nationally this week after posting its third 197-plus score of the season to beat No. 6 UCLA last Friday in Coleman Coliseum.

Rankings are calculated by Regional Qualifying Score at this point in the season. The formula takes a team’s top three road scores and its next three highest scores, home or away. It then drops the high score and averages the remaining five.

Florida jumped Oklahoma to retake the top spot this week while the Sooners settled in at No. 2. Michigan retained its third-place ranking for the sixth consecutive week, while LSU moved up to No. 4 after posting its highest home meet score of the season against No. 8 Georgia.

The Tide is ranked third on the balance beam and vault after posting its second-highest overall score of the season on the beam against the Bruins. Alabama is also ranked fourth on the floor exercise and eighth on the uneven bars.

Junior Kim Jacob is ranked 13th nationally after winning the all-around against UCLA. Jacob is also fifth on the floor exercise and 11th on the balance beam, after posting scores of 9.95 and 9.9, respectively last Friday.

Senior Ashley Priess moved up to claim the No. 17 spot on balance beam, following a season-high 9.925 against UCLA. Junior Diandra Milliner is 11th and senior Marissa Gutierrez is 17th on the vault. Milliner also moved up to No. 24 on the floor exercise, after tying her career-best score of a 9.950 against UCLA. Junior Sarah DeMeo is ranked 11th on the balance beam.

Alabama travels to Baton Rouge this Friday to take on No. 4 LSU at 7 p.m. CT. The Tide beat the Tigers earlier this season 196.575-195.525 in Coleman Coliseum.
