Jimmy Gracey, a junior majoring in accounting, was reported missing in Spain on Tuesday while visiting friends who are studying abroad.
According to a 9:22 a.m Facebook post from his mother, Therese Gracey, Jimmy Gracey’s last known location was Shôko, a Barcelona nightclub, at 3 a.m. He was separated from his friends at the club overnight and didn’t return to his Airbnb at Ronda de Sant Pere.
According to Therese Gracey, local police found Jimmy’s phone while searching another person. She said in a Facebook comment that iron-clad privacy laws prevent police from revealing more information but posted photos of Jimmy so that other students in the area could look for him.
Therese said Jimmy was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, dark pants and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross on it.
“UA staff are in touch with the family and those associated with them to offer support and assistance in any way possible,” said Alex House, a University spokesperson.
In a message translated from Spanish and Catalan by The Crimson White, the communication office of the Metropolitan Police Region of Barcelona said that it was aware of the situation and had opened an investigation.
“We are now making the first checks into a possible disappearance,” the RPMB said.
The U.S. Consulate General Barcelona deferred a request for comment to the U.S. Department of State. A State Department spokesperson told The Crimson White that “the Trump Administration has no greater priority than the safety and security of Americans.”
The spokesperson said that the State Department can provide assistance in filing missing persons reports about Americans abroad and help with understanding local procedures.
“Due to privacy and other considerations, we have nothing additional to add at this time,” the spokesperson said.
