There have been a lot of constants during Alabama’s six game win streak — consistent play from quarterback Ty Simpson and the wide receiver room, the emergence of the pass rush including Yhonzae Pierre and head coach Kalen DeBoer’s black hoodie.
Deemed “the black hoodie of death” by Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz, Alabama is now 14-2 in games when DeBoer dons the black hoodie. In fact, the Crimson Tide is 14-0 when DeBoer wears the long-sleeved edition.
The hoodie has even sold out online as fans have raced to recreate the look.
“It’s [the hoodie] kind of got a life of its own right now,” DeBoer said. “We’re rolling with it.”
If Alabama continues its impressive streak, the hoodie is well on its way to becoming a part of program lore forever, much like former head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s houndstooth hat.
It has already secured a spot in the Paul W. Bryant Museum on campus.
“This piece isn’t just team apparel — it’s a growing part of Crimson Tide tradition,” the museum sign reads.
Appearing in the museum as well as all over social media has made the hoodie more than superstitious; it’s sacred.
After the Crimson Tide defeated Tennessee 37-20 in The Third Saturday in October rivalry, DeBoer had jokes about the black hoodie.
“I told the guys not to put any ashes, or get any ashes on it,” DeBoer said.
DeBoer isn’t about to change his wardrobe either, as the larger-than-life hoodie has quickly become a fixture of winning in Tuscaloosa. Fans are eagerly waiting for the weekly announcement that DeBoer will wear the trademark garment, this time in a hostile environment against South Carolina.
