Even in the wake of unspeakable terror, the American LGBT community continues to face daily discrimination. A gay man who survived this weekend’s horrific mass shooting in Orlando can be fired tomorrow in most states due to his sexual orientation. Though LGBT couples can now marry, wedding cake manufacturers can refuse them service. Many protections afforded to African Americans under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 are not extended to LGBT American. Many argue that new civil rights legislation is necessary to solve this problem, while others contend that nongovernment action can be taken that does not infringe on property rights. We examine both perspectives in the following columns.
