Alabama women's tennis loses in second round of SEC Tournament

After defeating Missouri 4-0 in the first round of the SEC Tournament, the No. 14 seed Crimson Tide found itself on the wrong side of a 4-0 match in a second round loss to No. 6 seed Texas A&M on Thursday. The loss drops Alabama to 5-18 on the year.

The Aggies started quickly in doubles, earning a 6-2 victory on court one over senior Natalia Maynetto and junior Erin Routliffe. The point was secured with a second 6-2 win, this time on court three against junior Danielle Spielmann and sophomore Bennett Dunn.

In singles play, Texas A&M extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Spielmann on court four. The next point came on court five, where Alabama junior Joanna Nena Savva fell 6-4, 6-4. Finally, the match ended with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court three over Maynetto.

Texas A&M will continue to play No. 3 seed Georgia, while Alabama’s run in the SEC Tournament is over. The team is unlikely to make the NCAA Tournament, but Routliffe and freshman Andie Daniell remain possible candidates to represent the Crimson Tide in singles play.
