Former president Guy Bailey a presidential candidate at University of Memphis

Former University of Alabama President Guy Bailey is one of four finalists being considered for the University of Memphis’ next presidency.

According to the University of Memphis website, Bailey is being considered alongside David Rudd, provost at the University of Memphis; George W. Hynd, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the College of Charleston; and Sharon Gaber, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Arkansas. The finalists will visit the University of Memphis from March 16 to 25, and the Tennessee Board of Regents will make their decision within a few weeks after the visits.

Bailey served as president at The University of Alabama for 57 days before stepping down, citing his wife’s declining health as the reason for doing so. Bailey served as president of Texas Tech University from August 2008 to July 2012 before joining The University of Alabama staff. Following his resignation October 31, 2012, Judy Bonner, who served as interim president before Bailey, was unanimously chosen by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees as president.

Bailey was one of five finalists being considered for the position of president at New Mexico State University in 2013. Garrey Carruthers, former governor of New Mexico, was eventually chosen for the position.
