Fans associate Bryant-Denny Stadium with many things: a football team with 18 national championships, four Heisman Trophy winners and the phrase “Roll Tide.” Aside from a longstanding legacy of victories, the stadium is also home to a host of concessions options.
From pretzels to Dippin’ Dots to barbecue, Bryant-Denny Stadium has just about anything fans might want. One item in particular, though, seems to stand out 一 the Denny Dog, a regular hot dog, named after the stadium itself.
“I only get a Denny Dog if I’m there,” said Kiki Stathis, a senior majoring in communication studies. “I think it’s a staple of Tuscaloosa, I think it’s the best hot dog out there.”
Denny Dogs are available at various locations throughout the stadium, including 11 “Fan Favorite” stands. The Denny Dog, ringing in at $5.99, is the second cheapest item on the “Fan Favorite” menu, coming in right behind a small bag of chips.
Denny Dogs can also be found at carts throughout the stadium, but the pricing remains the same.
Sophia Marshall-Pelayo, a junior majoring in biology, said she prefers a loaded hot dog, also known as a Stadium Dog, to a traditional Denny Dog. She said the Stadium Dog is “miraculously satisfying.”
The Stadium Dog is another piece in the stadium’s legacy, going back to the 1960s. It consists of a sauerkraut and onion mixture with a ketchup-and-mustard based sauce. Though the recipe for the sauce has changed slightly since the original company no longer handles the University’s concessions, the Stadium Dog remains a fan-favorite.
Students say that not every Denny Dog is a winner, though.
“I’ve had a couple that were burnt that I paid for, and it was a bit of letdown, but for the most part, I love Denny Dogs,” said Ian Oskins, a junior majoring in kinesiology. “They’re really greasy, and they get me going for the game.”
Oskins said that a Denny Dog tastes better when it’s free, as when they are sometimes given out during the third quarter.
“I really like Denny Dogs,” said Barrett Newman, a senior majoring in management information systems. “They really help you recover when you’re down bad.”
