The Department of Theatre and Dance is set to host its annual “High School Theatre and Dance Festival” on Sept. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival, which will take place at the recently renovated Bryce Main building, offers workshops and activities to local high school students interested in the disciplines of theatre, technical theatre and dance.
“The Education and Outreach team has curated a dynamic schedule that blends education with fun, and being in a facility like Bryce Main is the cherry on top,” said Asterilla Monteiro, the instructor of arts management for the Department of Theatre and Dance.
In addition to the interactive workshops, attendees can participate in games, networking opportunities and performances by theatre and dance students and instructors.
Following the performances, attendees will get the chance to ask questions to current students and staff in a panel session.
William A. Martin, an associate professor of theatre and the director of vocal instruction for the musical theatre program at the University, teaches a “16-Bar Cut” workshop every year at the festival where students get an introduction to musical theatre auditions. He said he values the outlet and resources the festival gives to the next generation of performers.
“These young people are excited, and we share insights and important information that may not be a part of their high school curriculum,” Martin said.
Monteiro said she also admires the opportunities the festival gives to high school students.
“We hope that the festival allows us to make the art form more accessible to Alabamians,” Monteiro said.
